Frequently Asked Questions
A fraternity is composed of individuals who have joined together with others for support and assistance. They each have their own unique secret rites and a name consisting of Greek letters. Through common experiences centered on the pursuit of higher education, service to the community, development of leadership skills, and friendship, members of fraternities build relationships that last far beyond the college years.
For American University Fraternities, the recruitment process consists of three official events held by each fraternity in order to meet anyone interested in joining. The first two events are “Open Recruitment” events, meaning that anyone interested in joining Delta Tau Delta is invited. After the two Open Recruitment events, there is a Closed Recruitment event, which is more formal and is invitation only.
During this time a relationship is built between many men within that organization and the recruit. At no point during the recruitment process is alcohol allowed to be used. Using alcohol to meet potential recruits or entice recruits is known as “Wet Rushing” and is strictly against the rules laid out by the Interfraternal Council (IFC) and all national fraternities. Go to our main page for more information on our Recruitment events. After these events, if the Brotherhood feels that they know a recruit well and would make a good addition to the chapter, a bid is extended to the recruit. A bid is a formal invitation to join the organization. Bids for freshmen cannot be extended until bid night, which is set by the IFC.
The time you put into the fraternity determines what you will get out of it. The more time you are willing to put in, the bigger difference you'll make and the more you will get out of it. Like any organization, there are general expectations of you. You will be required to attend meetings and events. The fraternity will teach you to manage your time and balance your academic load, work, and social commitments.
Succeeding academically is the reason you are here at college and Theta Episilon's philosophy on Academics reflects this. As a pledge, academics should be your primary concern. The minimum GPA requirement to join a fraternity on campus is a 2.25. Because we strive to pledge only the best of the best on American University’s campus, we require that pledges and brothers maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA.
